Jewellery & Silversmithing: Structured Intermediate
Friday Mornings | 10.00-13.00 | £200 | 10 weeks
Would you like to learn to make interesting jewellery pieces using step-by-step, foolproof techniques? Enhance your abilities and become a skilled, more independent creative jewellery maker.
This course provides a unique opportunity to develop your skills in jewellery and silversmithing techniques, following a formal teaching programme developed by Elia Rizzo.
Each term participants will address a different project in the well-equipped Cambridge Art Makers’ space. The project will be carefully selected by the tutor in order to stimulate a progressive growth of every participant’s practical and design skills.
The projects will cover a wide range of processes taught at the high level Elia himself learnt in workshops in Florence. Aspects of design and methods will be focussed on ensuring a professional execution and finish.
Through making specific items each term, Elia will cover the following aspects of becoming a jeweller:
- Design tips
- Discovering and expressing your own, personal style
- Methods of production, including:
- Mechanisms and clasps
- Soldering techniques
- Sawing techniques
- Metal smithing
- Basic stone setting (advanced techniques taught on separate, short courses)
- Texturing methods
- Polishing techniques
- Using drawbenches to make wire
- Technical advice
- Professional finishing
Though taught in a group Elia will also give individual attention to students. Whilst each term will cover a specific project there will be opportunities for variations on the technique where design and personal style can be developed.
This is the ideal course for really enhancing and perfecting techniques that you may, or may not, already be familiar with.
Full details as to the terms schedule will be confirmed before the term starts.
There will be some copper and brass available to begin the course but students will need to order and bring their own silver and other materials. Advice will be given regarding suppliers.
This course runs for three terms every year, each term consists of 10 Friday morning classes. We take a break over half term.
This course is suitable for those with previous jewellery making experience.
A discounted rate is available if you book the course together with the Friday afternoon session: Jewellery & Silversmithing: Supervised course (with the same tutor, Elia Rizzo)
