Intermediate Jewellery

Tuesday Evenings | 18.00-21.00 | £230 | 10 weeks
This course is for those with some experience of jewellery making who are looking to improve their skills.
For these initial classes Helen will focus on chain-making, practicing in copper wire then working in silver. Starting with chain making is a great way to practice and perfect soldering, and a great way of creating a piece from start to finish, including construction of t-bars and hooks.

Helen will also offer the opportunity to explore some of  the following:

  • Different metal forming techniques, from fold forming, to forging, carving and shaping metal and water casting (using silver scrap).
  • Designing and creating 3D forms in wax, using wax carving tools, experimenting with different types of wax, casting items and professionally cleaning and finishing cast pieces.
  • Elements of stone setting, from cabochon and flush setting, also tube setting to claw and collet, depending on students self directed projects.
  • Recycling and reforming of scrap silver/gold. This is an important and useful bench skill.
  • Design and development.
This is the pilot run of this course but we hope to run it three terms every year. Each term would consist of 10 Tuesday evening classes with a break usually over local school half terms.

This course is only suitable for those with previous jewellery and silversmithing experience. You will be asked to detail this when you book.
