Cambridge Art Makers | Short Courses
As well as teaching two regular Stained Glass classes with us, Jill also offers short courses in copper foiled stained glass, glass fusing and glass slumping.
Copper Foiled Stained Glass
Copper foiling is a stained glass technique used, among other things, to create tiffany lampshades (unfortunately a day course is not enough to create a lampshade but you can make beautiful ornamental pieces!). We usually give our courses a theme to help inspire designs but you are free to be creative or base your designs on designs from Jill. Select from a variety of vibrant coloured glass pieces and learn how to cut, foil and solder your pieces to make charming flat or 3D pieces. You can create specific motifs or spontaneously join pretty pieces of glass that inspire you!
Glass fusing involves arranging and layering pieces of glass and other materials that are then melted together in a kiln to create designs. These courses offer the opportunity for participants to create small decorative items that could be made into jewellery or ornaments – 100 x 100mm maximum. By cutting and layering sheet glass and other materials you can create patterns and shapes that then blend according to the firing. For a day course the schedule is usually as follows; the morning usually focuses on learning about design, creating shapes, understanding materials that can be fused with the glass and ways of mounting glass for jewellery. The afternoon usually explores colour and how to incorporate all these elements into designs.
This is a form of glass fusing (above) that uses moulds to create shallow bowls and plate shaped glass pieces, 10-15 cm sq. Create your own designs by layering and placing different glass forms together with other materials. Our two day course usually follows the following schedule; the first session focuses on making tiles with two types of glass and using colour. The second focuses on using moulds to shape the tiles into dishes and on creating relief pictures.
Check the individual course details for specific information on each course.
These courses are suitable for all levels from beginner to experienced.
All materials are provided. Pieces made on fusing and slumping courses will need to be fired in our kiln. This is a long process so will not be completed during the day. Participants will be invited to collect their pieces at a future date or can request for them to be posted to them at an extra cost. This may take a number of weeks depending on the kiln space and kiln schedule. Details on this will be provided on a course basis.
Tutor | Jill Fordham
Jill has worked as a locally based stained glass artist for 25 years. Her work includes taking commissions from private clients, exhibiting regularly and teaching, and she enjoys following her own inspiration as much as encouraging and inspiring other’s creativity. The glass techniques she works with are leading, copper foiling, fusing and slumping, and glass painting. A source of inspiration for many of her designs is capturing fluid forms, and using glass to recreate the way these forms are affected by light and she also like geometric patterns! Find out more on her website: Hurdy Gurdy Glass.
