Wooden Spoon Carving

On this course you will learn how to carve an eating or cooking spoon from a branch of locally sourced green wood (probably cherry, alder or walnut depending on availability) using an axe, straight knife and curved knife.
We will learn how to use these tools safely and efficiently by understanding the edge geometry of the blades and how this relates to the grain of the wood. As part of understanding how to read the grain to make a strong spoon we will look at how a bent branch can be used to make a naturally cranked handle.
We will also look at sharpening techniques on a water cooled wheel and on flat stones. Sharpening will be essential should you wish to pursue spoon carving and green wood working further in the future.
Groups will be limited to six people so Olly will be able to give his full attention to all involved. While carving can be a meditative individual activity, it is also enjoyable in a group, where we can help each other and share ideas.
You will finish the day with a spoon that will be a joy to use for many years to come, and the skills to develop your carving further in the future.
