Wooden Bowl Turning
with Oliver Moses
Saturday 8th June | 10.00 – 16.00 | £180
From green wood log to bowl in a day! Turn your own wooden bowl with Olly using a lathe. Learn what it takes to axe a log to form your starting block (Olly will pre-prepare blanks for you to work from but will explain how it gets to this stage), learn how to use and sharpen shaping tools and turn your very own piece on the lathe.
With a focus on reading the grain and using edge tools in a way that is sensitive to it in order to get the most strength and longevity out of your bowl.
With only two participants on each course you will receive plenty of attention from Olly as you learn to turn.
Once a bowl has been turned, without the use of sandpaper to leave the texture of the crisp edges left by sharp chisels and knives, like the texture of hand thrown pottery, it is left to dry and warp slightly to an organic form.
Olly’s favourite bowls and spoons are the ones with familiar shapes and tool marks that remind him of the enjoyment that went in to making them every time he uses them; we hope you will get the same sense of satisfaction from the pieces you create on the course that you will be able to enjoy using for many years to come.
You may wish to do the Spoon Carving class first as there are many overlapping skills.
All materials will be provided. Please note that once your bowl is complete it will need to dry out at home for a number of weeks before you can use it.
If you and a friend would like to do this course but on a date of your choice, please get in touch: firstname.lastname@example.org
