Hard Wax Carving

with Elia Rizzo

***postponed until further notice***

Tuesday 14th – Saturday 18th April | 10.00-16.00 | £300

This will be a 4.5 day course. It will finish at 13.00 on the Saturday.

Challenge or develop your sculpting skills through carving a ring from a solid block of wax! Have fun discovering how to carve and create beautiful, replicable, jewellery pieces.

During this course Elia will introduce you to hard wax tools and guide the class through making a domed ring; carved on the inside and out.

Hard wax is an interesting and easy material to work with, once shaped it can be cast in various metals to produce the final pieces. Its unique qualities offer an exciting array of design possibilities; saving money and time bypassing steps needed to make the same piece through traditional processes.

The course will include demonstrations on:

  • Carving techniques
  • Fixing minor mistakes!
  • Wax soldering
  • Fixing air bubble issues
  • Various finishes

Elia will also talk through the actual process of casting the piece in metal once complete, how to calculate the casting prices in different metals from the individual wax pieces, the advantage of wax casting for ‘mass’ production. He can advise on how and where to get your pieces cast through a professional jewellery casting service; this will be at the participants own cost and organisation.

Basic proficiency in use of standard jewellery tools is desirable.

All tools and materials are provided along with tea, coffee and biscuits, but please bring packed lunches.
